"Can You Stain My Pergola?"

We actually build pergolas, succah frames, removable kosher sechach slats, fences and decks. And yes, we stain existing ones too.

What's the best way to maintain a pergola or deck?

Wood is sensitive to the elements including rain and wind, but more than anything else, here in Israel, we need to protect outdoor carpentry from the sun.

Solid stains protect better than translucent stains, however some people choose translucent stains for a more natural look.
Lighter colours reflect more UV rays than darker colours which absorb them.
Either way, any stain protects the wood from sun damage.

How often does a pergola or deck need to be painted or stained?

Regular pine or SPF decks and pergolas need to be re-stained every 3-5 years, depending on exposure to sun, rain and wind.

Pressure treated wood has a more greenish tint, and is the standard lumber used for decks and fences in North America. Due to the way it has been processed, it holds up to exposure to the elements and does not require stain or paint for about a decade.

Composite (synthetic) decking is a great choice if you want to install it and forget about it. It doesn't need any maintenance, ever, because it's not wood; it's plastic. However, some people don't like the look of it, or the initial investment.

Ipe, a dark, exotic hardwood, needs almost no maintenance for the lifetime of the deck. It is recommended to wash it from time to time with a mild soap and water mixture.
